VACID Africa's Proposal for Africa's Development

VACID Africa runs training and support programmes through the involvement of local professionals keen in working with youth, women and men at the local level who are trained to promote localized development. VACID Africa promotes the interest of professionals who may have been dislocated from their areas due to employment or learning. We create caucuses of local human resource based that then creates a local chapter of VACID to promote the learning that promotes the creation of cottage industries through the collective action of smallholder producers. We support the creation of non-political institutional frameworks that are managed through technology to ward off impropriety thus promoting transparency. In order to ensure that the local professionals identify with the collective action, we promote a share-based model of the cooperative whichACID Africa has used to promote

investment by local people in the areas where it has worked. Our model of Githunguri, Ndumberi and Kikama in Central Kenya are always examples of sustainable models that have supported.

For every region, we focus on the beneficial agricultural value chains that then create the basis of our interaction with the cooperatives. We identify the potential for value addition and/or enhancement of product value as can be tapped from the marketplace for the identified crops or products. Once identified, we put in place mechanism for aggregated produce collection and processing or marketing if the processing infrastructure is not in place. We realize that communities lose out in many ways if they are not involved in processing. We therefore recommend that they process what they produce. Atthat point they seek ways of how VACID Africa can work with them to identify a partner who can lend them, on affordable basis for the creation of their processing infrastructure.

VACID Africa has demonstrated the success of its model by creating networks of service providers currently spread in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan, Malawi, Zimbabwe and Eritrea. Each of these areas creates a possibility for labour exchange based on what individuals have demonstrated as creating value for their own people.
